In a hectic life, good food may be its best medicine. Tonight, one needed to look no further than the Durham Library for some healing delectables. At the annual Taste of Durham, there would no finger to the lips signaling to simmer down or stern looks from any librarians to take your talking elsewhere. The normally quiet isles took on a celebratory atmosphere. Music and familiar voices filled the air. The connection of so many local faces brought this town together once again. Every corner of the library was infused with spices and sweetness. I tried my hardest not to start the evening with dessert, although Kim from Kim's Cottage did her best to persuade me. Her peanut topped chocolate creation had me at hello. In a small town like Durham it's amazing how cuisine from Italy, India, Asia, Mexico and America could be so well represented. I sampled as much as I could indulging in more chocolate than fit for a lady while holding down the camera trigger simultaneously. Katie from Perk on Main worked her magical crepes into the atmosphere, Lyman shared their pies, ice cream could be found from the Dari Serv and Coldstone. Main Street from top to bottom was represented. From Linos, Durham Kitchen and the Whole Enchilada all the down to cozy Korner and Time Out Tavern, I felt like I had covered two miles in less than 50 paces. It was an extra pleasure to see some of our favorite local chefs and restauranteurs out in the open away from the daily toil of their kitchens. It was also a great sight to see our librarians take a break from checking out books and play the role of bartenders and hosts. The sold out benefit was great success for the library that everyone loves. While we all spend too much time in our lives passing each other by, this was a great place to reconnect with neighbors and friends and make new acquaintances in America's oldest library. While this was my first taste of Durham I will make sure it's not my last. Until next year, I have a lot of local restaurants of explore. I could possibly get away with not having to cook for a couple of weeks if I play my cards right. In the mean time, I better lace up those running shoes tomorrow. I have a lot of calories to burn off. Many more photos in slideshow below.
